I read Thomas Thrum’s 1907 book about Hawaiian gods and stories. This was the first book really published about Hawaiian cultural beliefs, I am sure partly because it was illegal in the United States to even speak Hawaiian until 1978. This to me was really saddening, as well as the whole history of how the United States government stole Hawaii from its own people, and then imprisoned their queen in her own home for trying to start a revolt to get it back (and this was only after she went to Washington to petition, she was ignored completely, so naturally one would want to do anything to fight back).
One fact is that all the individual islands of Hawaii have different gods and slightly different versions of stories. It seems a normal thing after learning that immigration to Hawaii took place through over at least 800 years.
